Sony VAIO VGN-NR430E/S 15.4-inch Laptop (1.86 GHz Intel Pentium Dual-Core T2390 Processor, 2 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium) Silver
- What I neededI was in the process of replacing my desktop PC. I had to go through three PCs before I got one that worked. The first two I had to keep power cycling it after they locked up(returned them). I decided I needed a laptop for when I was away from home. I decided to go with a brand name I could trust. I ordered the Sony VAIO VGN-NR430E/S 15.4-inch Laptop (1.86 GHz Intel Pentium Dual-Core T2390 Processor, 2 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium) Silver.
Out of the box it worked and the only trouble I had was finding the icon on the desktop to configure the network adapter

- An excellent notebook for the priceI bought this notebook 1 month ago, and it has been running smoothly and cool
(I had one that overheated before, that was a major issue; the blue screen of
death appeared after a while), it's a very
good notebook for the price. If you choose this product, I suggest to look for it
on some price comparison engine, [...], you can
knock down [...]from that price. I bought it for [...]t best buy. Sony Vaio always has some nice multimedia software pre-installed, although this particular computer
also has quite a lot of crapware. If you want to put linux on it if you hate
vista, you sure can.

- Not that goodI bought this computer several weeks ago and it was just a let down. If you are doing the basics like email, using websites, etc..then this computer will be great for you. I just don't think this computer handles the demands of vista very well and at times it appeared to run slowly for me. I am returning this computer and either getting a better pc laptop or buying an apple.

- This computer is truly top of the lineI love my new computer so much it is a really great price and a great deal I have not had any problems with it and it runs very fast and well. Amazon was the cheapest place I could find it ordering online! I can't describe how great this computer is plus it's a very cute color and just has a nice layout about it, it is the best purchase I have made since I bought my ipod around 3 years ago :)

- Nasty reflection in the screen, lack of touch pad on/off buttonThis laptop was chosen by wife for her work on papers and reports. We liked the perfect finishing, the touch of the keys on the keyboard, but we have overlooked a few quite substantial annoyances:
1) The screen is very glossy, almost glass like, and in many situations it reflects massively light, for example from windows or spot lights. In some conditions you can almost use it as a mirror for personal grooming! Simply stunning that a company like Sony would commit such a blunder.
2) Change of the viewing angle even by as little as 5 degrees changes colors and contrast values quite massively, downright to being unusable for photography and design work.
3) The touch pad is too sensitive and the device lacks an on/off button. At some time my wife dropped the laptop, she could not work at all because for her the cursor would change its location chaotically and erratically. A research of this problem on the Web unveils that numerous users complain about this. The best way around it is to locate the Sony utility called VCCPointingDevice.exe, make a link to it on desktop and use it to manually enable/disable the touch pad. I wish the touch pad could disable itself automatically upon attaching an external mouse, but I found no way to achieve this. Thus do not forget the mouse! We found no "key-only" way to re-enable the touch pad without a mouse!
Well, now we know, our next laptop will be better. We will strictly look for a non glossy, non reflective screen, see Dell's as an example, and we will look if the laptop has a touch pad on/off button. These two features are go/no-go criterion, we learned the hard way.
If you use laptop for work, don't be fooled by the "sony class" material, looks and finishing. Stay away from this device!!
