ASUS N61JQ-X1 16-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Dark Brown)
Rating: - Better than I thought. Fast Boot up and fast performanceThis computer is really great. I did a lot of research on it before I decided to buy it, and this one seemed to fit all the requirement I want. The delivery itself was wonderful, it arrived two days before it said it would, and it is a good looking laptop. There is a lot of ASUS branded software on the computer, many would call it bloatware, but I find it useful. The Intel Core i7 processor is so fast that it uses up a lot less of the memory than most other processors would. The display and functions are really easy, it is like one click to turn off the bluetooth or the wireless, and one click to turn it back on. One thing I must warn is with the Express Gate. I had a lot of confusion with it, but I read the manual THROUGHLY, don't just skim through it like I did several times, and I found out that Express Gate only turns on when the computer is OFF. So that is something useful to know. Also, be cautious if you use the ASUS CopyProtect. Do not lock the CD-DVD Drive or the External storage drives (USB port) or else they will not appear on the computer. I had that confusion as well. The only bad things I could say about this computer may only be with my computer, but the computer display acted a little strange at first. When I first used it, I opened up the computer window and it said this computer had two hard drives. But when I had to restore the computer to it's factory condition (had nothing to do with the computer, it was all my fault) it was back to normal, saying it only had one. I still don't know what it meant, maybe it was just my computer. but I wouldn't consider that a deal breaker. Oh, and also, this computer runs HOT.I read that ASUS computers do, so I would get a good cooling pad with a fan or two, because it will help cool it down.....a bit. I have a two fan laptop cooling pad, and the vent STILL blows out hot air. But the bottom of the laptop is cool, it is strange. Rating: - The display is mostly the issue.I had the experience of working with two of these N61s. The first was exchanged due to what appeared to be a hardware failure, or hardware in the process of failing. On three occasions the computer suddenly lost power. All power. Which appeared linked to the use of the supper USB port on the left hand side of the machine, as two of the outages occurred subsequent to its use. The second machine did not experience this problem. As well, there were two issues with the display on both machines, one of which could have been adequately addressed had tech support been on the ball. The other had to do with very poor color rendering. Both machines had a very strong blue hue that was difficult to get rid of. As well the black levels were just poor, and the screen was a dust magnet. As to the reference to Asus tech support. I tried vigorously to implement my own color management profile, but neither comp would retain my color settings profile when emerging from sleep or hibernation, and sometimes from off. This as it turns out is a Windows 7 issue, not Assus. But their tech support apparently were not aware and futiley tried to solve it . So this added to my frustration, as i assumed it was an Assus issue. With the Sony I have now, I have since created a sufficient work around to bring up my color settings. Had I known this at the time, I may have kept the second machine. Color management issues aside, the distinct blue hue was less pronounced with the replacement machine and after a system reinstall, as suggested by Assus tech support, I got an ok picture. The first machine was just too poor. Other than these issues, the display is a dust magnet, the resolution needs to be higher and the black levels need to be improved. As well, the keyboard could have been a bit more solid. And then there was the side lights that all together could have and should have been done with out. On the positive side. The computer itself seemed pretty awesome. It was very quick with startup, running office, firefox and looking at videos, sometimes all at once. And it ran cool and quiet. I also liked the rubber skin, was a nice addition. As I stated, had tech support been more on the ball, I may have kept the machine. The black levels and lower resolution didn't bother me so much as it did my tech savy friend. The dust may have become annoying over time. But the computer itself seemed pretty great. Looses one star for the display issues and another for the poor tech support, poor quality of the first machine and the other minor negatives. Rating: - Powerful and GreatSo far so great. I would like start saying this laptop has everything you need: core i7 processor, usb 3.0, wifi N and ATI HD 5730 graphic card. Besides hardware specifications, this laptop offers a multiple range of computing levels. From office computing to gaming or graphic design. The processor and the GPU allows you to play games with Direct 11 suppport or work with heavy load programs. The size of the screen is great for working with multiple windows at the same time and resolution is great (You don't need Full HD 1080p in a 16" screen). The HDMI output permits Full HD when is connected to a big LCD/LED and looks great. Additionally, USB 3.0 is definitely a "+". The next gen of flash memories and hard drives will use. The speakers are not that loud as I expected but the sound is clear. Multitouch pad is one thing you really get used really fast and works perfect. Webcam is 2.0Mp but the fps is low so the image will not be smooth. So far I like this laptop and I recommended to all of you. The price is great and the performance is even better. Rating: - Everything I wanted in a laptop.I'm not going to go into a detailed review, as others have pretty much covered it. I wanted this laptop to do all the basics, plus be able to play games on it if I wanted. I wanted to play StarCraft 2 on this, and this works flawlessly. Boot up time is quick, and the Windows 7 is nice. The laptop actually looks better than pictured in Amazon. ONLY complaint I have with this thing is the bloatware that was initially installed on it, there was a good bit, but I uninstalled in myself and I got no other complaints. Recommended. Rating: - ASUS N61JQ-X1Initially, I was disappointed when the laptop was having startup problems after a few days upon receiving it. I sent it in for service to ASUS which was a somewhat positive experience-(ASUS has a RMA process with FEDX-shipped to ASUS via FEDX GRND. Got my laptop back in about a week. Then another disappointment- it blue screened on me as I was installing an antivirus program. Got that fixed by the antivirus tech support. Presently, laptop is working fine, but I'm crossing my fingers. Hopefully, this is an isolated case. |
